Unlike active systems, passive fire protection (PFP) does not “activate” and has no moving parts. It is integrated into the building’s structure itself, and its purpose is to contain the fire within a single zone (fire compartment) and prevent the building from collapsing for a specified period of time.
Systems for active fire protection (AFP) are those that are triggered in the presence of fire or smoke to detect, alert, or extinguish the fire. Unlike passive protection, active protection requires motion, fluid, or electricity to function.
